INSPIRATION AND CREATIVITY
When we do an artwork, we start with an idea of what we are going to do. But then the material with which we work has its own ideas. The good artist is not the one who impresses one's ideas on the material, but the one who works with the material and lets the material have its say, too.
"This glaze is running down in completely unpredictable ways", and the artist knows, "Ah! This is good. This is good. I didn't anticipate that." And in the end when you look at the pot, it's a pot in which the artist really accomplished what he or she wanted, but the clay and the glaze also did what they wanted. That's the same with paint and the same with weaving and the same with drawing, and the same with any art, anything you make.
No matter what you are doing with your life, you experience this constant interplay between your own choices and the materials at hand, be they clay or flour or flowers or sounds or numbers or lives or ideas or anything else that can be named. To hold your own inspiration and yet be open to the influence of the moment, finding a poised give-and-take between the two (David Steindl-Rast).
