Description:

This workshop will introduce essential and fundamental information and skills for successful enameling. Participants will learn and work with a variety of methods for creating complex enameled surfaces on flat metal.

The “basics” will cover metals suitable for enameling and preparation for enameling; information about enamel types and preparation for use; enamel application methods; importance of test tiles; and how to determine “which color to use first”.

The “fun stuff” will include sifted techniques of stenciling, dry screen printing and sgrafitto with opaque enamel colors.

Working time will allow participants to work on and fire pieces using the various enameling techniques demonstrated.

Cost:  $300

This fee includes Barbara’s instruction and the specialized enameling materials and use of her tools.  Each student will be provided with a list of supplies that they will need to bring to the class.  This includes things like a Sharpie, dust mask, old magazines, etc.

Students will have the option of bringing their own copper and steel pieces to enamel on, or Barbara will be offering suitable items for sale during the workshop:

Prices for copper or steel circles range from $1.50 – $2.50 with the sizes being 1″ up to 1.5″.  Some are flat and some are domed.

Prices for pre-cut/shaped pendants are $16 – $20 and the Un-Adorned Pins (copper blank for enameling with nickel silver backing and tabs for holding the enamel in place) are $45 -$50 each.
